Ugly Cooking with Reckless Abandon

A collection of recipes (a loose term, more "creative guidelines") gathered from around the world and developed into ugly messes, most of which can be cooked at home.

Bel now owns and runs Doctor Coffee's Cafe in Darlington, north-east England, and some of these dishes appear in the cafe. It was here that the Ugly Cake Company was born. UglyCakes, in fact, any sort of Ugly Cooking are dishes that taste fantastic but don't always look that appealing. Bel does not believe that the first bite is with the eye. This book is a celebration of food in all its forms and of cooking food to eat, not to look at.

This is not a success story. I am very far removed from those glamorous “people to watch” magazine articles about young entrepreneurs or ambitious women or hip millennials embracing the artisan/tech revolution or whatever it is the cool kids do.
So few of those entrepreneurial books and certainly none of those inspirational memes ever tell you about things going wrong, about the disasters, the mistakes, the impossible decisions you’re faced with, or about the toilets you have to clean or the arseholes you have to deal with, or about the stupid risks or how hard you make yourself work for so little reward.
History is written by the winners. Inspiration is found in success. Perhaps this story should serve as a warning then? Read on if you dare…

It seemed like a good idea at the time.
